What Is Triple Processed Mulch? (And Is It Worth the Extra Cost?)
Oct 1, 2026
If you’ve been shopping for bulk mulch in the Chicago south suburbs or Northwest Indiana, you’ve probably noticed that not all hardwood mulch is priced the same. Economy blend at $18 a yard makes sense. But triple processed bark at $25 โ what exactly are you paying the extra $7 for?
It’s a fair question, and the answer is more interesting than most people expect. The difference isn’t just texture or appearance. It’s about what happens to the wood before it reaches your driveway โ and what that means for your soil, your plants, and your long-term results.
What “Triple Processed” Actually Means
Standard mulch is shredded once. Double processed mulch goes through the shredder twice, producing a finer, more consistent texture that packs together better and spreads more cleanly.
Triple processed bark goes through a third time โ and then it’s composted.
That composting step is the part that matters most. After the third shredding, the material is allowed to partially decompose before it’s bagged or delivered. By the time triple processed bark reaches your beds, it’s already well into the breakdown process โ and that changes how it behaves in the landscape significantly.
The Nitrogen Drawdown Problem โ and Why Triple Processed Avoids It
Here’s something most mulch guides don’t explain: fresh, uncomposted wood chips can temporarily tie up nitrogen in the soil as they decompose.
When raw wood material hits the soil surface, soil microbes immediately go to work breaking it down. Those microbes need nitrogen to do their job โ and they’ll pull it from the soil, competing directly with your plants for a nutrient they need to grow. The effect is called nitrogen drawdown, and it can cause yellowing, stunted growth, or sluggish spring performance in beds mulched with fresh, unprocessed material.
Triple processed bark has already moved through that phase. The composting process exhausts the initial nitrogen demand before the product reaches you โ so when it goes down in your beds, it feeds the soil rather than competing with it.
For vegetable gardens, newly installed plants, and beds where strong spring performance matters, that difference is real and noticeable.
What Triple Processed Does for Your Soil Over Time
Beyond the nitrogen issue, composted mulch actively improves soil health in ways that decorative mulch doesn’t.
As triple processed bark continues to break down through the season, it contributes organic matter directly to the soil beneath it. Over successive seasons โ spring application, summer breakdown, fall top-dress, repeat โ the organic matter level in your beds rises measurably. That matters because organic matter is what makes soil hold moisture, support beneficial microorganisms, and stay loose and workable rather than compacting into the clay-hard surface common across Will County, Lake County Indiana, and Kankakee County.
This is the compounding benefit that experienced gardeners in NWI and the south suburbs notice after two or three years of consistent triple processed mulch application: the beds just perform better. Soil is easier to work, plants establish faster, and moisture retention improves even between mulch applications.
Is the Extra $7 Per Yard Worth It?
For most applications, yes โ particularly these:
Vegetable and edible gardens. No nitrogen drawdown, active soil building, natural organic material. This is the right product for anything you’re growing food in.
Newly installed plants. Establishing root systems benefit from the microbial activity in composted mulch, and there’s no risk of nitrogen competition during a critical first season.
Clay-heavy soil beds. In Will, Kankakee, and Lake County Indiana โ where clay soil dominates โ the long-term organic matter contribution of triple processed mulch makes a genuine structural difference over time.
Perennial borders you’re not replanting annually. Stable beds where you want to improve soil health season over season without adding fertilizer or amendments.
Where the premium is less justified: purely decorative beds where aesthetics are the priority and soil building isn’t a goal. In those cases, Double Processed Organic at $22/yd or a color-enhanced option at $32/yd may be the better fit.
How to Order
Triple Processed Bark is $25 per yard โ $3 more than Double Processed Organic and the best investment in the lineup for long-term soil health. Minimum order is 2 yards, with same-day and next-day delivery available across NWI and the Chicago south suburbs.
